This Flick In Brief
Based on the true story of crafty M.I.T. professors and students who conspired to beat Las Vegas at their own game, 21 loosely follows the interesting original story, but then adds typical Hollywood fluff to fill out the rest. Also, in contrast to most movies based on gambling or Las Vegas, it takes away the key component of gambling - luck, the gamble ingredient in gambling. The result is a fairly borderline film, heavy on Hollywood cliches and depleted of the exhilaration of beating the odds. However it does have its moments, such as the MIT crew coming up with new roles, disguises, and methods of beating the casino security systems, and the Laurence Fishburne character tasked to busting cheaters and card-counters.
Certainly not the best Las Vegas-based movie, 21 is still worth a roll of the dice at least once. Anyone familiar with gambling or the Las Vegas scene will find something to hold their attention.
