This Flick In Brief

Director Ridley Scott (Black Hawk Down, Aliens, Gladiator) uncannily re-creates mid-1970s New York City as he loosely covers the legendary crime story of Harlem's Frank Lucas (Denzel Washington), Bumpy Johnson (Clarence Williams III), and Nicky Barnes (Cuba Gooding Jr.).

The film's main focus is Lucas, (who in real life took the title as the biggest heroin dealer in the United States), and the aspiring New Jersey lawman Richie Roberts (Russell Crowe), who pursued Lucas against all odds and obstacles.

Although not the best work from Scott, Washington, or Crowe, American Gangster still delivers solid work from all three, and is worth watching if only to appreciate the incredible recreation Scott made of the heroin-heavy times of New York City in the 1970s.
