This Flick In Brief

Released during the smattering of 'wolf' pictures that occurred during the 1980s, (Wolfen, The Howling, Teen Wolf), An American Werewolf in London unfortunately seems unsure of what it is. At times genuinely funny and at others suspenseful and gruesome, it's hard to take it seriously as either a comedy or a horror film. Director John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers, Spies Like Us, Coming To America) brings his usual comedic touches, but this time with gore and fright. The result is a combination that's an uncomfortable one, leaving the film coming off more as a special effects exercise than anything else.

While not the greatest horror or comedy movie, An American Werewolf in London has its moments, and anyone interested in special effects should appreciate the dazzling work of Rick Baker, who would later move on to other great things - a list far too long to even mention.
