This Flick In Brief

A recreation of the ill-fated 1971 NASA mission of the same name, Apollo 13 does what few space movies have been able to pull off - show humans in space in a weightless environment. Adding to this realism is director Ron Howard's (Cocoon, A Beautiful Mind) attention to detail, as cockpits, spacecraft, control centers, cars, and homes are all recreated to reflect the period.

Actor Tom Hanks is a natural fit to play mission commander Jim Lovell, as his often stiff personality fits perfectly with the NASA stereotype and the mentally-focused demands of an astronaut. Rounding out the film is a solid supporting cast, in particular Ed Harris, playing fabled NASA Flight Director Gene Kranz.
