This Flick In Brief
Based on the life of con man Frank Abagnale Jr, Catch Me If You Can is one of the most easily enjoyable movies ever made. Set primarily in the 1950s, director Steven Speilberg slickly recreates the era as it covers Abagnale's improbable story of impersonation and fraud. Abagnale, currently the corporate head of a firm that pioneered many anti-fraud techniques, started his career on the other side of the fence, writing millions of dollars in fraudulent checks. Along the way he also impersonated airline pilots, a doctor, a lawyer, and a host of other identities that kept him one step ahead of the FBI, who pursued him diligently. He also did it all before the age of 21.
Leonardo DiCaprio is an almost perfect fit for the shape-shifting role of Abagnale, moving effortlessly through one scheme after another with natural aplomb. Tom Hanks' generally stiff and square personality also fits the Agent Hanratty character like a glove, and both actors make the film what it is. The icing on the cake is director Speilberg's legendary attention to detail, which makes the film come alive with authenticity.
An all-around excellent film, Catch Me If You Can will likely get the thumbs up even from those who usually don't care for DiCaprio or Hanks.
