This Flick In Brief
Eddie Murphy's last movie before sailing off into the sea of ridiculousness that would be his career onwards, Coming To America is far from an exceptional comedy. In fact, it's actually fairly mediocre. But for some unexplainable reason it grows on the viewer. Perhaps it's John Amos's (Good Times, Die Hard II) enthusiasm for his role as the owner of fast-food ripoff 'Macdougals', perhaps it's the absolutely terrible acting from Arsenio Hall, perhaps it's the counterbalancing seriousness of James Earl Jones, or maybe it's just the overall combination of lighthearted comedy that does the trick. Whatever it is, Coming To America is worth watching at least once.
Aside from being the lead actor, Murphy takes on a series of bit parts throughout the film, watch for them in credits. Also, watch for Randolph and Mortimer Duke - nemesises to Murphy's character in Trading Places - making a quick cameo.
