This Flick In Brief
A movie almost tailor-made for the talents of Paul Newman, Cool Hand Luke deserves its spot as one of the greatest movies ever made. An 'oldschool' film with an oldschool premise, oldschool look, and oldschool feel, it takes the viewer to a 1950s chain gang in rural Florida and then never lets go. A fairly basic story on the surface, the film however comes alive and each frame feels like one is reading a storybook. Paul Newman and George Kennedy (in his first big role) carry the film from beginning to end, and are complimented by a solid cast, along with director Stuart Rosenberg's natural, laid-back style.
A must-see for anyone appreciating solid filmmaking, and anyone wondering where the famous line 'what we got here is... failure... to communicate' came from.
