This Flick In Brief
In 1990 Kevin Costner (The Untouchables, No Way Out, JFK) made an ambitious career move for an actor, by producing, directing, and starring in a most unlikely genre for the times, a western. The result is Dances With Wolves, winner of multiple Academy Awards and recipient of much critical praise. Costner's secret ingredient in the film is that he tells a traditional western story from the perspective of the American Indian instead, as they attempt to retain their territory, resist the advances of the U.S. Cavalry, and survive on the American plains.
While many can criticize Costner's cardboard presence and delivery, Dances With Wolves is an enjoyable and beautiful movie that's well-rounded and superbly shot. The buffalo-hunting scene in itself is enough to put it on the map as one of the most memorable westerns ever made.
