This Flick In Brief

One of the better films from director Ridley Scott (Alien, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down), Gladiator pits a Roman general (Russell Crowe), loyal to a slain emperor, against the ex-emperor's delusional son (Joaquin Phoenix) intent on holding power by any means necessary.

While history is brilliantly re-created with fantastic sets, deft use of CGI, and impeccable wardrobe, the characters themselves are only loosely based on real people. But historical accuracy aside, Gladiator hits on all cylinders with breathtaking cinematography, fantastic acting from the entire cast, pulse-racing battles and gladiator fights, and a plot to reasonably tie it all together into a film worthy of five Oscars and 12 nominations.

Fans of Roman material will notice Derek Jakobi, Emperor Claudius from the 1976 PBS miniseries I, Claudius, as Senator Gracchus.
