This Flick In Brief
Far ahead of its time, Tron would have done better to wait until computers and digital terminology became more mainstream than it was in 1982. At its release the film met lukewarm reaction and reviews, and it wasn't until years later when the personal computer was as common as a toaster that people began to fully appreciate it.
Primarily taking place in the inner workings of a computer, Tron created its own unique world that so far has not been duplicated. Creating characters out of bits, programs, viruses, and firewalls, the film follows programmer Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) as he's forcibly inserted into a computer, becoming just another digital sprite in a computer's functioning. Flynn then has to battle his way out and back into the real world, but not without the help of Tron (Bruce Boxleitner), the fearless security program.
Created long before computer-generated graphics were what they are today, Tron still holds up as great special effects. If you can get past the shaky premise of a human being getting digitized, the story carries the movie the rest of the way and is enjoyable to watch. Science fiction fans and computer enthusiasts certainly won't be disappointed.
