This Series In Brief
A victim of network mismanagement much like the original Star Trek series before it, Firefly was canceled long before it reached its true potential. Created by Joss Whedon (Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel), the series was met with mediocre ratings, and citing its high production costs, Fox chose to cancel it after only one season. From there it found new life in syndication on the SyFy channel, reaching its target audience and achieving cult status. Often listed on 'shows we'd bring back' and 'top cult series' lists in magazines and trade publications, Firefly is a sci-fi gem.
Set in the year 2517, Firefly takes a unique approach to science fiction. Following the ship Serenity as it skirts the edges of inhabited space, the ship's crew - survivors that fought on the losing side of a civil war - attempt to eek out a living amongst the under-developed frontier worlds, by freight shipping, smuggling, and if need be, even robbery. Low-tech and grimy, the Serenity crew often find themselves going from space travel to riding horseback.
Clever, witty, interesting, and innovative, Firefly is part western and part science fiction, and is all around a science fiction must-see. Those liking the show will want to watch the full-length feature film based on the series, titled Serenity.
