This Series In Brief
Taking an old and well-worn story and miraculously giving it new life, Smallville comes from a most unlikely place - the original WB network, now merged with the UPN to be 'CW'. Known for its long list of sub-par shows, the WB hit a rare home run with the series, as it's now on its ninth season with no signs of slowing down.
Based on the iconic Superman from DC Comics, Smallville revitalizes the superhero character (and even the entire franchise) by doing the opposite of what one would expect. Instead of adding to the series or expanding on it, it actually strips away much of what made Superman Superman. With minimal costumes, plausible special effects, and a focus on character development, the series pulls off an unlikely feat - turns the superhero genre into almost a soap opera.
With its roots going all the way back to Superman's high school beginnings, following his (and other superheroes') growth into adulthood and self-discovery, Smallville appeals to a wide range of fans. With it's very slick production quality and modern special effects, it's also one of the best-looking shows on television.
