This Series In Brief
Based on Flora Rheta Schreiber's book of the same name, Sybil was produced in two parts for television in 1976. Disturbing and unnerving, it depicts the 'dissociative identity disorder' of college student Sybil Dorsett (Sally Field) and her tireless psychiatrist Dr. Wilbur (Joanne Woodward) as they work through the childhood traumas that drove Sybil to having 16 unique and separate personalities, each unaware of the other.
Bringing a frankness and gravity to television that was uncommon in 1976, Sybil was nominated for numerous awards and remained the defacto movie on mental illness for quite some time. It's a disturbing movie, but one which anyone interested in psychology or drama should appreciate.
VHS and DVD releases over the years have not remained true to the original version aired in 1976, as several key scenes were edited. Anyone interested in watching the original version should seek out the Amazon link above, as it's the fully restored and complete version. It also contains a special features disk of cast interviews, actual therapy sessions with the real-life counterparts of Sybil and Dr. Wilbur, and a look at Sybil's disturbed drawings.
In 2007, Sybil was also re-made starring Tammy Blanchard and Jessica Lange.
