This Series In Brief
Even those who never cared for Paul Reubens' 'Pee-wee' character found a lot to like in Pee-wee's Playhouse. And even though it was billed as a children's show, many adults in the pre-DVR days of the late 80s found they were dragging themselves out of bed early on Saturday morning to catch an episode of it on CBS.
Centered on the famous Reubens character, Pee-wee's Playhouse mixed a variety of creative brilliance around Pee-wee Herman, employing animation, claymation, puppeteering, cleverly-disguised adult humor, animals, gadgets, and all-around lunacy to create one of the best half-hours to ever grace television. While never having much of a plot or direction, the show relyied on the pure lunacy of the Playhouse itself for much of its content, and every episode usually had a thin message that normally involved the self-centered Pee-wee learning to take other people into consideration. But while it's technically billed as a 'children's show', there is far more to Pee-wee's Playhouse and the show still has adult fans even to this day. Many credit the show as the precursor of many concepts that later appeared on the popular adult cartoon network Adult Swim.
