The Nitty-Gritty:

Q: What exactly is "jailbreaking"?

A: "Jailbreaking" is the term used when the firmware that runs the iPhone is modified, allowing for hidden features to be revealed, non-Apple Store applications to be installed, and for the phone to work with other phone carriers like T-Mobile and Verizon.

Q: Is this legal?

A: Yes, it's 100 percent legal. However, Apple doesn't like it much, but we'll get to that later.

Q: Is this difficult to do?

A: Sometimes it is. When you update your phone's firmware through iTunes, Apple patches how the phone was jailbroken previously. This means that every Apple firmware release requires a new jailbreaking method be developed to hack it. As such, the methods used to jailbreak vary in complexity, depending on the firmware version. Currently it's ridiculously easy.

Q: Will this void the warranty on my iPhone?

A: Neither Apple nor AT&T will offer any support whatsoever for jailbroken iPhones. However, jailbreaking is completely reversible, so if for some reason you need to send your phone back to Apple or bring it to the AT&T store, simply reset the phone to factory defaults in iTunes before you do. If the phone is physically damaged and you can't reset it to factory defaults, well then Apple or AT&T won't be able to see that it's jailbroken anyway, so don't sweat it.

Q: What's the benefits of jailbreaking?

A: Quite a few. Apple, for all their genius, are really stupid. They've left out many useful features that the phone is actually capable of, and they locked down any real customization ability. Many iPhone owners simply can't stand how Apple forces them to pay for simple things like ringtones, or get frustrated that the phone lacks basic features that other phones have right out of the box, such as assigning ringtones to groups. Also, there are many applications that vary in quality and usefulness available through the AppStore alternative called "Cydia", which is only available through jailbreaking.

How To Do It: SPECIAL NOTE: This method will jailbreak both the iPhone 3G and the 3GS, however the 3GS will not retain the break after rebooting the phone. Upon rebooting, the 3GS will need the blackra1n application run on it again.

First things first, cover the basics:

  • iPhone updated to version 3.1.2
  • Back up the phone via iTunes
  • Download the jailbreaking application from the digital pimp, blackra1n (Both Mac and Windows versions are available.)
  • iPhone connected to a computer via USB cable

From here, do the following:

  • Start the blackra1n app.
  • NoteIf you're running it on Windows 7 or Vista and want to avoid any possible errors during the jailbreak process, run the app in “Windows XP Compatibility” mode by right-clicking the application and hitting “Run As Administrator”.
  • Click on “make it ra1n”.
  • Let the application do its thing and let it reboot.
  • You should now have "blackra1n" in the list of applications on your iPhone. Run the app and select to install "Cydia".
  • Reboot the phone.

At this point you should have a jailbroken iPhone. To retrieve any contacts, pictures, etc that you had previously on the phone, restore the phone via iTunes from the backup you made before you started. (You did make a backup, right?)

From here you can browse the Cydia store for its free and pay apps. Doing a search for "Winterboard" and installing it will give the phone the foundation for custom themes, icons, etc.
